I've attached Andrea's beautiful reading of the Borges poem of thanksgiving to this post. I recorded the English translation in haste, but now after spending some time with the Spanish, I see many improvements. For example, I see no reason why "el prisma de cristal y la pesa de bronce" should be translated as "crystal prisms and bronze weights." Surely it's the prisms _of the_ crystal and the weight _of the_ bronze that Borges beautiful. Other improvements welcome. Happy Holidays.
Your piece in the NYT print edition today is wonderful - Stop Mutilating Classical Music to Sell it to Kids. Yes, it is a language. Reminds me of the wonderful Aaron Copeland book What to Listen for in Music which should be revisited.
Thank you. Nothing can be compared to the radio - the universal and most comprehensive medium, often superficially described as the one designed only for ears, dismissing the engagement of all other senses by the virtue of our imagination, knowing no boundaries in time and space. My favourite medium since being knee high, growing up listening to the short wave radio in 70s - the real window to the world, which majority of people have no idea about nowadays. Music (and not only) from all over the world, including Bach, first came through the radio and contributed a lot to my formative years. Just as I often said, that Bach made me a better human being, I would always point to the radio, that started it all. Please keep this format going and save it from being watered down by YouTube and such. Thanks for Borges in Spanish - it sounds very poetic. Happy Thanksgiving!
