Try watching sports on TV! A sports announcer will never use a 50-cent word when he (or sometimes she) can misuse a $20 word. So "difference" becomes "differential": "use" becomes "usage": and so on.
On a related note: could we all stop using "importantly" when the correct word is "important." I see this everyday, usually several times a day. A writer will make a point, then start the next sentence with "More importantly, . . . " WRONG!!! "Importantly" is an adjective; it modifies a verb. What the writer or speaker means here is, in essence, "an even more important point is the following. . . "
