wrt bwv 1075, the last/fourth canon in this program:

1) The line inverts itself (a 4th higher) exactly halfway through, at m.3 -- hence it’s an inversion canon as well as a rectus canon.

2) It looks like the canon works not just in two voices (as indicated in the score) but also in 3 & 4 voices, with the additional voices entering at one-measure intervals, that is, in m. 3 then m.4.

I haven’t worked this out on paper or tried it at the keyboard -- just in my head -- but see what you think and lmk

Excellent observation! I did not notice that the line itself is an inversion, thanks for pointing that out. I did try with more than two voices and it does work-- sort of: there is a clash between an A and a B... harmless really. Is that why JSB said 2 voices only? The result with 3 or 4 voices begins to sound a bit like the 'trias harmonica.' Thanks for noticing!
