In slight defense of current counterpoint pedagogy, it seems necessary that, in earlier coursework, a teacher must be completely strict about the rules, or else I don’t think I nor other students would have learned to be nearly as conscious of the general kinds of voice leading we write. It takes developing that kind of awareness in order to start writing more freely, though maybe you think that this is not best achieved through teaching rules.
Thanks for this. Personally, I would espouse for a more keyboard-based approach to voice leading through partimento practice. I think there is a real movement away from the counterpoint pedagogy of 20 years ago into this type of practice, as I don't really think Fuxian counterpoint typically leads to any freedom. After all, Bach would have learned his voice leading through partimento.
